Homemade Applesauce

Homemade Applesauce – Apfelmus, Apfelbrei

A homemade Applesauce Recipe is easy to prepare. You can use peeled or unpeeled apples. The Applesauce only takes 4-10 minutes to cook. Applesauce is called Apfelbrei in Germany.

Ingredients for Homemade Applesauce Recipe:

  • 2 kg (4.4 lb.) of apples (McIntosh, Braeburn, or Fuji)
  • ½ cup of water
  • 4 tablespoons of  sugar
  • cinnamon (optional)

Preparation of Applesauce:

Cut the apples into quarters, remove the cores and peel off the skin using a potato peeler. Cut them again in half and place in a saucepan. Add sugar and water to the saucepan and bring to a boil. Turn the heat down and let simmer for about 4-10 minutes or until the apple pieces are soft. Harder apples may take approximately 10 minutes to cook. Softer apples should take about 4-6 minutes to cook. (The McIntosh apples, as seen in the pictures below took 4 minutes to cook).

Pass the apples through a food mill. You can also press the apples through a sieve using a wooden spoon or process in a blender. Add more sugar and/or cinnamon to the applesauce to your personal liking.
