Shepherd’s Pie Recipe – Hirtenkuchen

A Shepherd’s Pie recipe with a German touch. The Shepherd’s Pie is described as a Hackfleischauflauf mit Kartoffelhaube in Germany.

Ingredients for the meat of the Shepherd’s Pie Recipe:

  • 1 kg (2 lb.) of ground lamb meat OR ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 120 g (4.23 oz) of diced shallots
  • 4 cloves of diced garlic
  • salt
  • pepper
  • paprika
  • 1 pinch of cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons of tomato paste
  • 2 teaspoons of chopped fresh rosemary
  • 2 teaspoons of chopped fresh mint
  • 2 teaspoon of chopped fresh parsley
  • 3 tablespoons of flour
  • 125 ml (4.5 oz) of water
  • 408 g (14.5 oz) of frozen peas
  • 300 g (10.58 oz) of peeled and sliced carrots

Ingredients for the mashed potatoes:

  • 6-8 mid-size potatoes
  • 3-4 tablespoons of sour cream
  • 1 tablespoon of butter
  • 1 egg yolk
  • salt (as needed)
  • 226g (8 oz) of shredded sharp cheddar cheese

Preparation of the meat and the vegetables:

Heat the oil and fry the ground meat and shallots for about 10 minutes in a saucepan. Continually stir so that that the meat is evenly browned on all sides. Add flour and mix thoroughly. Mix in the chopped herbs, tomato paste, garlic, and spices. Add the water and let it simmer for about 7-9 minutes. Remove from heat.

Cook the prepared carrots for about 10 minutes on high in the microwave or on the stove. Add the carrots along with the peas in the saucepan.

Preparation of the mashed potatoes:

Bring the washed and quartered potatoes to a boil in salt water (1 teaspoon of salt). After about twenty minutes, strain the potatoes. Add the butter, sour cream, and egg yolk and mash them until all the lumps are gone. Add the cheddar cheese and mix it well into the potatoes. Use a potato masher to make all the ingredients nice and smooth.

Final Steps:

Use a fire resistant dish and butter it evenly on the bottom and sides. Fill the bowl with the meat mixture. Next, spread a layer of mashed potatoes over the meat. Once your potatoes are nicely spread, form impressions on the top layer with the back of a spoon.

Serving meal made with Shepherds Pie Recipe

Preheat your oven to 175°C – 200°C (350°F – 400°F). When ready, place the Shepherd’s Pie in the oven on the middle rack and bake uncovered for about 35-45 minutes. The mashed potatoes should have a little of a crust on the edges. To have on the top more of a crust, add a few more minutes to the baking time. Serve Oma’s Angel Cake as a dessert.
